Classification of Castings Produced by Foundries

There are many types of casting, which are customarily divided into:

① Ordinary sand casting, including wet sand, dry sand and chemically hardened sand.

② Special casting, according to the modeling material, it can be divided into special casting with natural mineral sand as the main modeling material (such as investment casting, mud casting, casting workshop shell casting, negative pressure casting, solid casting, ceramic casting etc.) and special castings with metal as the main casting material (such as metal mold casting, pressure casting, continuous casting, low pressure casting, centrifugal casting, etc.).

The casting process usually includes:

① Preparation of casting molds (containers that make liquid metal into solid castings). According to the materials used, casting molds can be divided into sand molds, metal molds, ceramic molds, clay molds, graphite molds, etc. The quality of mold preparation is the main factor affecting the quality of castings;

② Melting and pouring of cast metals, cast metals (cast alloys) mainly include cast iron, cast steel and cast non-ferrous alloys;

③ Casting treatment and inspection, casting treatment includes removal of foreign matter on the core and casting surface, removal of pouring risers, relief grinding of burrs and seams and other protrusions, as well as heat treatment, shaping, anti-rust treatment and rough machining.

Advantages

(1) Can cast a variety of complex shapes of castings, such as box, frame, bed, cylinder block, etc.

(2) The size and quality of castings are almost unrestricted, as small as a few millimeters, a few grams, as large as ten meters, hundreds of tons of castings can be cast.

(3) Can cast any metal and alloy castings.

(4) Casting production equipment is simple, less investment, casting with a wide range of raw materials, so the cost of casting is low.

(5) The shape and size of the casting are close to the parts, so the workload of cutting is reduced and a lot of metal materials can be saved.

Because casting has the above advantages, it is widely used in the blank manufacturing of mechanical parts.

The casting process can be divided into three basic parts, namely casting metal preparation, casting mold preparation and casting processing. Cast metal refers to the metal material used for casting castings in casting production. It is an alloy composed of a metal element as the main component and other metals or non-metal elements are added. It is customarily called casting alloy, mainly including cast iron, Cast steel and cast non-ferrous alloys.
